Optimize your warehouse logistics with SAP EWM
Do you want to improve your logistics processes, replace SAP WM with SAP EWM or are you interested in WM in the public cloud? We can advise you and implement the right SAP solution!
How you benefit from SAP EWM
- SAP EWM is SAP's strategic warehouse management product and is therefore constantly being developed and kept up to date
- With SAP EWM, warehouse logistics is deeply integrated into the core business processes - for example in purchasing, production or shipping
- SAP EWM can be used to map and systematically support simple warehouse logistics processes as well as highly complex processes
SAP EWM is interesting for you if ...
- ... you are not yet using a warehouse management system.
- ... you use SAP WM and now want to switch to SAP Extended Warehouse Management due to maintenance expiring in 2025.
- ... the functional scope of SAP Stock Room Management is not sufficient for you or you are bothered by the fact that the solution is no longer being developed further.
- ... you want to restructure and comprehensively optimize your warehouse logistics processes.
- You have been operating your warehouse management in a decentralized manner up to now, but want to bring it back into the ERP core - “embedded”.
Are you aware of these challenges?
“SAP WM has been discontinued - and that makes us nervous. We will probably switch to SAP EWM, but we don't know the solution well enough yet and don't know whether it's too big for us.”
“We don't yet use our own warehouse management software. That's why we often lack an overview. Our processes are manual and confusing, which leads to errors and inefficiencies in inventory management.”
“Our decentralized warehouse management system is decoupled from the ERP - and therefore a real black box from an ERP perspective. Without integration, we don't have a real-time overview and there are always problems with data reconciliation.”
“We are not yet working mobile and paperless. Adapting the software we use is too time-consuming. We're not efficient and flexible that way. A digital workflow would save us time and money!”
SAP EWM - the strategic warehouse management product from SAP
Optimizing warehouse and supply chain processes is currently the goal of many managers. SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) is often the tool of choice here - a solution that is already integrated into SAP S/4HANA.
This means that anyone who implements or has already implemented SAP S/4HANA is given the opportunity to use SAP EWM free of charge!
The main advantage of SAP EWM over highly specialized warehouse logistics software solutions is the deep integration of warehouse logistics into other SAP modules or core business processes such as purchasing, production and shipping.
3 advantages of SAP EWM:
- Already included in SAP S/4HANA: The basic functionalities are included in the core and can be used without additional license costs
- Maximum transparency and efficiency: Deep integration into core business processes and therefore real-time insights and improved responsiveness to changing requirements
- High innovation security: Permanent updating and expansion of the solution, as EWM is SAP's strategic warehouse management product
In addition to SAP EWM, SAP also offers two other solutions for mapping warehouse logistics. These are
- SAP Stock Room Management and
- the WM of the Public Cloud.
SAP Stock Room Management is usually only of interest to customers who are already using SAP WM. The solution corresponds to SAP WM with a reduced range of functions, but is no longer being further developed by SAP.
The WM of the Public Cloud provides the functions of SAP EWM in the Public Cloud. The solution maps all core functionalities - with a slightly reduced range of functions compared to SAP EWM - and is constantly being expanded.
Various factors play a role when deciding on the right product. Companies should always consider various issues, such as
- Functional scope,
- compatibility checks,
- integration into the system landscape and
- adaptation to their own holistic IT strategy.
Use cases - How SAP EWM benefits you
A large retailer uses SAP EWM ...
- ... to optimize and automate its warehouse processes in a highly automated logistics center.
- SAP EWM controls the movement of goods, optimizes storage bin allocation and performs continuous inventory checks.
- This shortens processing times, reduces the error rate and makes optimum use of warehouse capacity.
An online retailer uses SAP EWM ...
- ... to process its returns efficiently - from returns and quality checks to restocking or disposal.
- Thanks to real-time transparency and automated processes, the retailer can process returns faster and reduce its costs.
A multinational electronics group uses SAP EWM ...
- ... to improve its cross-docking processes (forwarding goods after arrival at the warehouse without putting them into storage) and thus reduce warehouse logistics costs.
- SAP EWM enables the company to identify incoming deliveries, automatically match them with outgoing orders and forward them immediately for delivery.
SAP EWM with GAMBIT: Get started with our 4-phase roadmap
If you want to introduce SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) or one of the other solutions, you should avoid an ill-considered introduction.
The danger: An unprepared implementation can destabilize internal processes. It is therefore important to carry out a well-founded preliminary study in the form of a roadmap project before implementation.
In this preliminary project, our EWM and logistics experts examine and evaluate four relevant aspects in particular, which can be divided into four phases:
- Phase 1: the selection of the appropriate warehouse management system (SAP EWM, stock room management, WM of the public cloud)
- Phase 2: examining the deployment, the licensing options and therefore also the scope of functions (including the choice between decentralized or embedded EWM in SAP S/4HANA)
- Phase 3: the degree of coverage by the SAP best practice standard (process mapping in the customer company, etc.)
- Phase 4: the project schedule and cost estimate (depending on the solution, project content and functional scope)
Depending on the product and license selection, the roadmap determines whether SAP best practice processes can be used, which adaptations are necessary and which additional developments are required.
The following always applies: SAP EWM does not have to be highly complex, but can also be simple. We therefore take a close look at which EWM functions you need in your company - and which you don't!
